Driving on the left side of the road is such a metaphor for how adaptable we need to be in life in general. It made me think of eating disorders caregivers and how adaptability can make the whole journey easier and less stressful.
Here are a few metaphors for families supporting a loved one with an eating disorder that came to me while driving on the left side of the road and the right side of the car in New Zealand.
Wish I had a better view of the gorgeous mountains in this photo for you, but keeping the sun out of my eyes was more important. 🙂
- Believe in yourself.
- Keep it simple without overthinking it.
- Be confident.
- Go slowly when you’re not sure.
- Let others know where you’re going (turn signals are great metaphors).
- Ask for help when you’re not sure what to do next.
- Have a plan for where you’re going.
- Enjoy the journey while keeping your eyes on the road.
- Sometimes you’ll turn on the wipers when you mean to use the turn signal. It’s okay.
- It helps to have watched others do this first.
If you or a family you know could use some 1:1 coaching in 2020 please note that my December birthday special ends on Jan 1.
